Newcastle Proposals
A set of nineteen proposals drawn up by Parliament that sought to impose a Presbyterian church on Charles 1 These were presented on July 1 1646
As well as a Presbyterian church Episcopacy was to be abolished; Ireland was to fall under the same rules as England as directed by Parliament and the Assembly of Divines (or Westminster Assembly; The army was to be controlled by Parliament for twenty years; there would be strict laws against Catholics; Officials were to be nominated by Parliament and King was to sign the Covenant.
It was clear that the Charles could never accept the proposals but he gave out confusion signals by appearing to consider the terms when he was actually negotiating with the Scots. This backfired when the Scots handed him over to Parliament.
Similar proposals were made in the Treaty of Uxbridge and Four Bills
